The Best Mittens for Toddlers This Winter (18 Months )

by Bailey Bouwman

We recently got asked this question on our TikTok: “What mittens do you recommend for an 18-month-old this winter?” Find the video on Youtube.

And here’s what I suggest for toddler winter mittens and gloves based on feedback and reviews from local families who shop the shop.

At 18 months old, kids are just starting to spend more time outdoors — daycare drop-offs, snowy walks, or those first sled rides. The right mitten can make winter adventures so much easier - don't forget to consider a rain mitten for these warmer mid season days. We broke down everything you need to know about rain mittens in another blog post.

🧤 Jan & Jul Toasty-Dry Mittens

These are a fantastic choice for milder winters. They’re insulated, fleece-lined, and rated to about –15°C, making them a great everyday mitten for chilly mornings. The no-thumb design makes them quick and easy to slip on little hands, which parents love. The trade-off? Less grip for toys or sled handles. For families who value convenience and warmth without bulk, they’re a top pick.

Think you might need warmer, just some of the time? Consider layering this glove with another glove, or using a hot pack. Don't let it's 'low temperature' rating discourage you - a sweaty warm hand is no good either.

🧤 Reima Ote Mittens

For longer, colder Northern BC winters, these are a step up. With a defined thumb, structured shape, and wrist adjustments, the Ote mittens stay put and keep snow out. They’re designed for active kids who will be outside for longer stretches.

🧤 Stonz Mittens (previous seasons)
In years past, we’ve carried Stonz Mittens and they’re still a solid option if you’re prioritizing warmth. Cozy and insulated, they do a great job in the deep cold. The downside? The looser hand space can feel a bit awkward in smaller toddler sizes. Still, they’re worth considering for frigid days.

Whether you prefer new mittens or preloved gear you’ll find options that fit your child and your budget at Nest & Sprout. Shop online anytime, or visit us in College Heights, Prince George to see and try on the options in person.

Note - depending on their stage, a lot of toddlers can be just fine exploring winter with the hand turnovers in their snowsuits. Pictured above, the winter my daughter was 12 months old we mostly did just that. I don't have her in any snow-gloves that year besides the occasional fleece. But she didn't go to daycare.
