How to Prepare Your Kids Clothing for Drop-Off at Nest & Sprout

by Bailey Bouwman

Are you preparing to consign your gently used children's clothing or previously loved maternity clothes with us at Nest & Sprout? To make the process as smooth as possible for everyone, we’ve created a simple guide to help you get your items ready for drop-off.

This will help you make the most out of your clothing because clothing that looks good, earns more money - and because we're your locally owned and operated boutique and it's the nice thing to do.

Step 1: Sort Your Items by Type, Not Size

When organizing your items, sort them into categories like fleece sleepers, pants, bodysuits, and jackets rather than by size. This is especially important for boxes of everyday brands - we will count your items by type when preparing your quote.

Step 2: Clean and Repair Your Items

We want to accept your best preloved items, so please make sure everything is in resale-ready condition:

  • Wash and Deodorize: Run your items through the wash to remove dirt, stains, and pet hair. Go light on fragrances and avoid using fabric softeners or strong additives, as some community members may be sensitive to scents.
  • Scrub Shoes: Clean the soles and surfaces of any footwear to remove mud and scuff marks. We reserve the right to charge a fee for cleaning shoes - and may do so, or reduce your earning potential.
  • Repair Beforehand: Ensure buttons, snaps, and zippers are functional. While we hope to provide repair options in the future, we currently cannot accept items in need of repair.

Step 3: Understand Our Condition Categories

We evaluate items based on the following categories:

  1. New with Tags (NWT): Perfect for unworn items that still have their original tags attached.
  2. New without Tags: Ideal for clothing that has never been worn but no longer has tags.
  3. Like New/Excellent Used Condition (EUC): These items have been worn only a few times and show no signs of wear, pilling, or stains.
  4. Good Used Condition (GUC): Items with minor signs of wear, such as light fading or a small, barely noticeable mark, but still lots of life left.
  5. Play Condition: Clothing with visible stains or signs of heavy use. Play condition pieces are priced affordably for families on a budget. For everyday brands this averages at $0.95-$1.45/piece.
Step 4: Focus on Boutique and Unique Brands

We love to see high-quality, unique, and boutique brands! Some of our favorites include:

  • Boutique Brands: Tea Collection, Villervalla, Loulou Lollipop, Jax & Lennon, Rylee & Cru, and Parade Organics.
  • Outdoor Brands: Patagonia, MEC, and North Face.
  • Value Brands: OshKosh, H&M, Zara, and Baby Gap are accepted but should be in great condition and something you’d personally buy preloved.
Step 5: Pack Neatly

Help us keep things organized by folding or packaging your items neatly. Ensure all buttons, snaps, and zippers are fastened. A tidy presentation makes it easier for us to assess and process your drop-off. It also means less ironing and steaming.

What Happens to Rejected Items?

We reserve the right to reject items that don’t meet our quality and brand standards. Any items we cannot accept will either be returned to you or donated at your request. Please review the terms of your consignment contract for more details.
