Consignment at Nest & Sprout: We're Going Appointment-Only (And Here's Why)

We quietly reopened consignment drop off a couple of weeks ago and within two weeks, we maxed out capacity. So here we are needing to actually make a big change and not just set rules on social media. We know there are consignment changes coming to town and this has empowered me to start thinking differently about how we want to operate.

Effective immediately, drop-and-go consignment is no longer available unless you have a preapproval directly and recently from me, Bailey. No exceptions. 

I know that's a shift. Let me explain.

Nest & Sprout is a small shop with small dreams. I mean that sincerely — not as a humble brag, not as an apology. Our success this past year has had me thinking about growing and being a big operation, but lately I remember that I don't want to do that. I want to be your neighbourhood corner store over a big name grocer.

When we started consignment, volume was slow - but now it's coming too fast, and much of it isn't a fit. Probably at least 20% of most boxes is stained, needs laundering, heavily pilled, and sent straight to textile recycling. This 20% work is the needle that's breaking our back. We just don't have the space to handle this or the staffing reserves. But trly, space is hard. 

I'm working on reinforcing that we're a consignment boutique, not Value Village. And the volume of mediocre intake was making it impossible to serve the consignors who bring us great stuff consistently or who have it in the back of the car. The sad reality is those consignors are not reading this...

So we're drawing a clear line.

Starting June, consignment is by appointment only.

We have plenty of preloved kids inventory to keep the shop well-stocked for months. This isn't about slowing down but it's about doing this right, correcting mistakes, and adapting. Seriously, I can't explain how fast we went from managing to being overwhelmed. And truthfully with a franchise opening, I'm too cautious to make any risks that could take me out. We're already in a precarious position. I'm worried about growing and then having to close. Instead I want to stay afloat through this and more of whats to come.

I keep saying I'll do this, but I just want to help everyone all the time. And I can't do that anymore. It's not sustainable. Between friends and employees, I need to listen to the birds in my ears and do this.
