Why Boot Bags Make Sense in Cold Canadian Winters (-25°C and Beyond)

by Bailey Bouwman

When the thermometer dips to -25°C and colder, Canadian parents know that staying warm is about more than just jackets and mittens. Footwear plays a huge role in keeping little ones comfortable and safe outside.

But here’s the thing: sometimes boots aren’t the right answer. No seriously; I know that Tiktok got heated about this but the boot bag is essentailly a mitten for your feet and does a much better job at keeping warm.

But like everything - especially for babies and early walkers. That’s where boot bags (also called soft soled boots or stroller booties) come in. This year we have two options from Reima - the antura and anturion. Like all good things, when you have options trying to understand which one is best for you is the hardest part.

The Reima Anturoin and Antura are two of the best baby winter booties in Canada for families looking for soft soled footwear for -25°C and colder weather.

What Are Boot Bags & Why They’re Essential in -25°C Winters

Boot bags are like a mittens for your child’s feet. Earlier I talked about why I prefer them to boots for young walkers under 18 months. Unlike stiff boots, they’re cozy, flexible, and built to keep out snow, wind, and cold.

Parents use them in strollers, car seats, and baby carriers, where bulky boots aren’t practical or safe.

At -25°C and colder, boot bags often work better than boots because they:

  • Keep feet warmer with thick insulation.

  • Are easier to put on than stiff winter boots.

  • Stay secure with adjustable closures that fit through multiple growth stages.

  • Offer snow and slush resistance without the bulk. In the deep cold waterproof isn't a top priority. Instead we look for other things like breathability

Reima Anturoin vs Reima Antura: Which Baby Booties Should You Choose?

If you’re shopping booties for your baby or toddler, you’ve likely come across Reima’s two popular options: the Anturoin and the Antura. This is what we've brought in to replace Stonz and compete in the boot bag space. The Reima winter booties is more closely resembled to the ever popular MEC toasty booties

Both are designed for Canadian winters, but they serve slightly different needs. And I thought we could take a look at what those are. We brought in more Anutroin this year knowing that many families choose the Jan & Jul booties for the warmer cool days; and then look for wool on the deeper cold days.

  • Choose Anturoin if you need full waterproofing and extra warmth for extreme cold and wet conditions.

  • Choose Antura if you want lightweight flexibility for crawlers, early walkers, or milder/drier winter days.

These are just one of many different styles of soft soled winter shoes for young early walkers available across Canada - for many of us we use these as a base to start layering for cold days. That said the Reima boot bags are not like the STonz, I wouldn't use them over something. They are fluffy and awesome.

What Parents Are Saying

Families love boot bags for being warm, light, and practical in real Canadian winters. You don't have to take my word for it - the reviews on this product from other retailers say it's a durable, easy to use product that provides comfort and and flexibility that babies need.

We know some daycares hate boot bags - and maybe it's becuase the wrong size, the wrong style, or what have you. One thing I've come to learn is a lot of people hate a product when they are using a product incorrectly. If that's your daycare, it's cool we can work on finding another idea. - or continue to lobby for change.

Other Ways to Keep Baby Feet Warm at -25°C (and colder)

Boot bags are just one option — many families mix and match different solutions depending on the day. I know that was me. I used the Stonz lightweight booties over a pair of Padriags most days during the coldest Northern BC winters.  Some popular choices include:

  • Wool booties like Emu Australia, Padraigs, or custom handmade pairs.

  • Thick merino wool socks layered under other footwear for natural warmth.

  • Stonz Toasty Puffy Boots or MEC Toaster Boots, both designed for cold Canadian winters.

  • Snowsuits with fold-over cuffs, which cover hands and feet without separate footwear.

Every baby and every winter outing is different. Sometimes you’ll reach for boot bags, other times a pair of woolies or a snowsuit will do the trick. The key is having a few strategies so you can enjoy the best of winter without worrying about cold toes.
