What Does the bluesign® Label Mean?

by Bailey Bouwman

This year you'll notice a new label on the sales floor. It's a bluesign® and prominent across Reima's collection of winter-wear for kids, and also found in some of the products from Jan & Jul.

At Nest & Sprout, we talk a lot about sustainability. The textile clothing industry is one of the impactful industries on our planet and what we can do in both new and used products helps make a better space everyday.

But what does bluesign®actually mean, and why does it matter for your family? We shared a little bit of this on our Instagram, and now it's time to record it here .

What is bluesign®?

bluesign® is an international system that helps make textiles safer for people and the planet. Unlike some certifications that only test finished products, bluesign® works behind the scenes with fabric mills, chemical suppliers, and brands to remove harmful substances right at the start of the manufacturing process.

That means fewer dangerous chemicals in the factory, cleaner water and air around production sites, and a safer final product for your family.

bluesign® Approved vs. bluesign® Product

You might notice two different phrases when shopping:

  • bluesign® Approved → This applies to individual fabrics or components (like a jacket’s outer shell or zipper). It tells you that part meets bluesign’s strict safety and sustainability standards.

  • bluesign® Product → This is the gold standard. It means every single component of the item is bluesign® Approved, and the whole supply chain — from dye house to sewing floor — is part of the bluesign® system.

Why it Matters for Families

When you shop bluesign®, you’re choosing:

🌍 Cleaner production — reduced impact on rivers, air, and communities where clothing is made.
👷 Safer workplaces — protecting the people who make our fabrics from toxic exposures.
🧵 Trustworthy gear — clothing that’s not only durable, but also made with fewer harmful chemicals.
💙 Peace of mind — knowing you’re supporting higher standards in an industry that often cuts corners.

Where You’ll See It at Nest & Sprout

We carry brands that care deeply about sustainability and transparency — and many are moving toward bluesign® fabrics and products. Whether it’s a winter jacket, a pair of mittens, or gear for rainy days, that little blue label is one more way you can shop confidently for your kids.

Jan & Jul appears to have just started adding Bluesign to their product collection and this informaiton is available online.

Final Thoughts

The fashion industry can be overwhelming, especially when you’re just trying to find something practical and affordable for your little one. At Nest & Sprout, we do the research so you don’t have to.

So next time you see the bluesign® label, know it’s not just another tag; it’s a commitment to safer textiles, better working conditions, and a cleaner planet for our kids to grow up in
