The Ultimate Winter Essentials for One-Year-Olds
As an ultimate list, I've recommended having two options in each category to adapt to a variety of different situations. It's more than okay to just have one. Think about your life style and choose what might work best for you.
1. Warm Heads
Keeping little heads warm is key. A trapper hat is great for wet and windy snow days, while a soft, everyday fleece hat like the Stonz Fleece Hat is perfect for everyday outings. Other great options: the Knit Winter Hat from Jan & Jul (available in pink, grey or cream) ; or just a toque from anywhere.
2. Warm Hands
Little hands need extra warmth without the bulk. Fleece mittens work for quick errands, but for serious warmth, Stonz Baby Snow Mittens is your must-have. These are mittens that will last multiple years and stand the test of most Canadian winters. For a backup every day pair, we recommend the Jan & Jul Toasty Dry Mittens are perfect—they stay on and keep tiny hands dry and toasty.
Other great options: Kids Fleece Mittens from Jan & Jul or their knit mittens.
3. Warm Feet
For early walkers, Stonz Booties with Liners are waterproof and adjustable, making them versatile for different weather. Without the liners, good for -5C which makes them perfect for mornings like today or add the liners for more warmth. For a better deep -20, try the puffer snow booties.
For casual mornings, Stay Put Cozy Booties are an easy go-to to keep feet snug; and the Winter Booties will add water and wind resistance.
4. Fleece Layers
A one-piece fleece suit is a parent’s dream for layering. Ideal for car rides and outdoor play, it provides extra warmth without restricting movement, so your little one stays comfy.
A snowsuit is great to have if you find yourself an outdoor parent playing in the snow, or needing a burning suit in the stroller. The Stonz Snow suit in Sunflower or Heather Grey and theJan & Jul Baby SnowSuit in Pink Forest or Polar Pals are both great options to take you through the winter.
5. Extras for Comfort and Convenience
Consider a shoe and glove dryer for those snowy, wet days, and wool socks for added warmth. Wool base layers also make a cozy addition for especially chilly days. For especially frosty days, a lightweight puffer jacket adds warmth and insulation without the bulk, helping your little one stay snug in style.
